As many of you know I have been using Firefox with the add-on “NoScript” for several years now. I have gotten so used to filtering the garbage on websites, that i have never seen the annoying Facebook status ticker. I started hearing about it from friends, and then on news sites, and finally on tech blogs. Facebook it would seem, have upset many people with this thing. I had to search the web for pictures of it just so i could see what the Facebook fuss was about.
The ticker is apparently a java run applet. Running Firefox with NoScript on, the Facebook ticker its automatically blocked, unless you enable it. ( I think I’ll pass) While this was a great bonus to me, maybe some of you may want to skip the latest Facebook upgrade.
NoScript will not stop the ticker from running and showing all your activity on Facebook, you just will not see it. Your friends will still see it.
This fix could only be a temporary solution. Facebook could decide to re-code the ticker and place it in page using html5 or something. For now, the combination of Firefox and NoScript will keep your Facebook page ticker free. (If that is your goal) After all, i’m sure someone likes the ticker……
If you don’t use Firefox, here is your chance. Not only will it remove the Facebook ticker, it will keep your computer safer from other annoyances like pop ups, rouge java application, doubleclick and other ad delivery services.
Just two easy steps;
Stay safe (and ticker free) online!
