Meltdown and Spectre Processor Vulnerabilities

On January 3, 2018, the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center became aware of a set of security vulnerabilities—known as Meltdown and Spectre that affect modern computer processors.

Exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to obtain access to sensitive information.

US-CERT Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerability Guidance

In Plain English? There is a security problem with almost every Intel processor produced in the past 20 years. This affects PC’s Mac’s, tablet’s, cell phones, etc. Nothing with an Intel processor is immune (they say.)

Someone can use this bug to get sensitive data off your computer (passwords, banking info, etc.)

For anyone interested in the technical aspects of this, click here.

Additional headache:

Not every antivirus software is compatible with the security update. If your antivirus is not yet compatible, your computer may crash if you apply the security update.

The 4 antivirus solutions AllPro Technologies uses are currently being evaluated to make sure they are compatible. We will send an update once vendor antivirus testing is complete.

Actions to take:

Do your updates!  – Do your updates!  – Do your updates!

Update your antivirus first, then update your computer. Microsoft said they will not update computers whose antivirus is not compatible. This should minimize the risk of 100 Billion system crashes.

AllPro managed customers:

We will be pushing the security patches for all customers subscribed to patch management as soon as:

  1. It is released
  2. The antivirus gets updated

There isn’t anything we can do until both happen. Stay tuned for more information.

How do I know if I am subscribed to PM (patch management?)

We include PM bundled in two products:

  1. Fully Managed Support Plans (commercial)
  2. PC Total Care (residential)

There was a time when we sold PM as a stand along product. It is now only available bundled inside the products listed above.

Security patches and updates, along with antivirus patches and updates, coupled with malware protection and updates, joined by system monitoring all work together to protect a system. We found we couldn’t reliably protect a system without all 4 aspects, so we introduced PCTC (PC Total Care) that includes everything you need. PCTC provides:

  1. Anti-virus
  2. Anti-spyware
  3. Anti-malware
  4. Malicious website protection
  5. Third party software updates
  6. Patch management
  7. Managed Windows updates
  8. 500GB encrypted cloud backup storage

If you want your system professionally monitoring and protected, PCTC is the product.

Stayed tuned for more information as Intel, Microsoft, Apple, and Android release more information.
